Christmas Week…

December 31, 2012

So Christmas is over, it really is a great time of year but I feel I have been too busy to fully enjoy it as I normally do. Looking through my photographs though, the few I managed to take through the whirlwind of visits I can see we had a lovely time.

This was my first Christmas as a wife here in the UK, and I was determined to start a few fun traditions for my new family.

The first is that we get our tree up as soon as possible, decorating my house has to be one of my favourite parts of the holiday season.

The second is that we will have an evening of Christmas shopping together, hopefully to finish off our list and then get drunk on mulled wine at the Christmas market, it isn’t hard that stuff is so strong…

I had multiple Christmas dinners this year starting with my office Christmas dinner at Graze, where I ate delicious pheasant and a mulled berries crème brûlée.

There was also a birthday party with friends where we had to dress as superheros, I came straight from another party and was given finger torches on entry… the coolest thing ever, also a great gift for kids, they are going in everyone’s stocking next year… so fun.

I also got to wear my sparkly bridesmaid shoes again…

I had brunch with my friends and their children – my ‘god-children’ at riverstation’s bakery day, not many places can do scrambled eggs that I like more than my own.

I brought a ton of bread that I am not sure how we got through, all of it delicious. You must follow riverstation on twitter and look out for the next one.

We also had our last wedding of the year the following day with a subtle winter theme and using riverstation’s own Christmas decorations…

They had the prettiest canapés and red and blue (!) cocktails…

I got given boxes of chocolates (from myself and my bosses)… I am obsessed with those salted caramels, and the Limoncello ones come in this beautiful tin and are amazing, very strong. They will be my pudding in January as one is more than enough!

I wrapped a ton of presents, another favourite thing of mine, I love to find a theme for my wrapping.

This year I had brown paper and added a little sprig of Christmas tree and wrote on them in chalk pen, before wrapping in ribbon and jingle bells, I did want twine but my order didn’t arrive in time.

I wrapped my husbands presents in red paper and made little Christmas wreaths to make his a little different from the rest.

Christmas Eve we went to visit my Mama and had our Christmas day with her and my brother and his girlfriend… starting off nice and healthy with nut roast and tons of vegetables, my Mum is vegetarian and I was so thankful for this light start to all of the eating!

That’s our Father Christmas jug, it seems everyone has their Christmas table traditional piece that come s out once a year and this is ours… also my Mum got out her Grans table-cloth… so pretty and still looking brand new.

We opened our presents and all of us got utterly spoiled, my Mum picked out the prettiest necklace for me, something I wouldn’t have picked out for myself but I love it… making it all the more special.

Ditto with this bracelet from my Husband, a positive outlook is something both of us are very good at most of the time but it takes practise, this is for those days when I am not doing so well to remind me to look on the bright side. It’s also from my favourite shop.

Not to mention all the other presents including a little something in a Liberty bag from my Brother and his girl… a lots of thank you’s to write this year…

Then on Christmas Day my Mum made scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, again must be done on Christmas day… and we ate some of the amazing Christmasy bread from riverstation…

Before we left to come back to Bristol for dinner with friends and their kids… how fun is Christmas with children around?!

The hosts took care of the dinner and each of us brought a course… the canapés were amazing… we had goats cheese, tomato and basil bruschetta, bloody mary shots, pear and mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto, blini’s with salmon and creme fraiche and chorizo and prawn skewers… wow…

The turkey and millions of sides was amazing, big thanks to Abigail and Matt for having us and cooking all of that food… we had so much fun hanging out with everyone, expecially the kiddos.

I was doing dessert but with little time in December and no time before the day I brought one, some friends have an amazing company called Copoazu Ices and make amazing ice creams and for Christmas made ice cream cakes so I got one for us…

We had chocolate fondant, halzenut and espresso ices with red berries and marsala… YUM

It was insane. Highly recommended!

Now Christmas Day became Christmas night and we drank so many bubbles followed by red wine, followed by port… that Boxing Day was a bit of a write off… we spent the day snacking on the sofa and drinking juice…

After we had recovered we made our way to Hertfordshire and my in-laws house for our Christmas together, we had yet more presents and dinners with them at their lovely home…

We ate the Christmas Eve dinner of ham with dauphinoise potatoes and red cabbage with apple strudel for dessert…

They got their traditional Christmas table decoration out… robin salt and peppers, and the silver and the crystal…

We ate the traditional smoked salmon, although this was specially flown from Scotland as a gift to our Gran who shared this with us, and it was amazing. I am going to remember that for next year… it was like sashimi and we cut the fillet into little chunky slices. Delicious.

Then we opened our presents with some Champagne and I rested up with the amazing Audrey before it was time to fill our bellies once again…

Then we pulled our homemade Christmas crackers and ate more turkey with all the trimmings…

We set fire to some brandy and enjoyed some Christmas pudding and coffee with my mother-in-laws favourite chocolates…

We ate cheese, more cheese, and more cheese which my Husband and I had picked up from Arch House Deli before we came… and which AlfieDog managed to steal and then still hung around for more the next day…

He managed to get more than half of the stinking bishop we had brought in one big lump from the table… although we think he regretted it when it made him burp like a man!

And we got spoilt all over again… with more lovely gifts and of course we gave ours too.

Lots of lovely time with our family. A great Christmas.

Now on to the New Years Eve parties… I am bracing myself, I could do with a night in!

I hope you all had a great holiday too.

Photographs by Haley Sheffield spotted at The Sweetest Occasion via Ruffled

Do you jump into your pajamas as soon as you get home? Just me?

I don’t believe you.

I am going to bag myself some really nice lounging clothing this Christmas in the sale… the above cashmere set is on sale at Whistles… don’t go there, it’s mine.

After wearing generally quite binding clothes all day at work, sometimes, most of the time, okay every day I come home and need to change immediately if I am not going anywhere. I do think my husband would appreciate some nice comfy clothes instead my pjs though!

There is nothing better than being comfy at home, but to be stylish too is the aim here.

What do you wear when you are chilling at home? No visitors to be seen?

Except they are paintings! Love this.

Gregory Thielker is the artist.

I love how this sugar sweet wedding party head into a moody manor for this wedding… fitting for today’s grimey weather.
